The National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

Join G-CAPP in Participating in the
National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

May 7, 2008

Over the past decade, the pregnancy rate for teens in Georgia has declined an impressive 30 percent.  Despite this progress, there is no time for complacency in our state.  Nearly 18,000 teens give birth in Georgia every year.  Our state has the 8th highest teen birth rate in the country.

The National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy on May 7th, is an opportunity for Georgians to raise awareness about teen pregnancy prevention among teens, parents and community members.  In recognition of the day, the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy is hosting an online Quiz that challenges teens to think carefully about what they might do in certain tough situations and to recognize that sex has consequences.  The Quiz can be accessed online at www.stayteen.org during the entire month of May.

G-CAPP and partners across the state will hold events and activities throughout the month of May to encourage teens to take the Quiz and to participate in community-led teen pregnancy prevention efforts.

There are many ways that you can help promote the National Day, including:

For Parents

  1. Encourage your teens to take the Quiz and use the Quiz as a conversation starter with them (see the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy’s resources for parents for tips.)
  2. Organize a local PTA or community center event on parent/teen communication about teen pregnancy prevention issues.
  3. Tell other parents and adults about the National Day and the Quiz.
  4. Encourage local schools and libraries to provide Internet access for teens to take the Quiz on May 7th and during the entire month of May.
  5. Get in touch with local policymakers to encourage them to issue a proclamation or resolution in support of the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.
