GCAPP's Honoring the Vision, Securing the Legacy 2017 Program Support Campaign

Our top priority at the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential is to ensure that Georgia's youth  achieve their full potential unencumbered by teenage pregnancy, bolstered by strong physical health, and supported by healthy relationships. We’ve been on this journey for 22 years and our success is due to the support of our community. In 2016, GCAPP provided effective programming that reached over 40,000 young people across the state.

FOCUS AREAS:
Physical Activity & Nutrition  |  Comprehensive Sex Education  |
Repeat Pregnancy Prevention
  |  Parent Empowerment  |  Youth Empowerment

Focus Area: Physical Activity & Nutrition
Campaign Goal: $175,000

Georgia has the 17th highest rate of obese and overweight adolescent in the United States: nearly 40% of our children are considered obese or overweight – and the number is higher for minority populations. GCAPP delivers programming focused on the physical health of Georgia’s children because we know that children who value their physical health tend to make better decisions about their overall well-being – in relationships, in school and at home.

Childhood Obesity Prevention Initiative:

In 2018 we’d like to triple our impact in this initiative by partnering with more elementary and middle schools in the metropolitan Atlanta region to plant school gardens, teach the “Plant, Grow and Learn” nutrition and garden curriculum and install flexible classroom seating – to keep our children physically active even when they’re seated at their desks.

Healthy Young Families Initiative:
In partnership with nonprofits that are members of our Second Chance Homes network, teams of GCAPP employees and volunteers will install gardens at sites that provide safe and stable housing to young women who are pregnant and/or parents of young children. GCAPP staff will provide the young women and their caregivers with inspiring speakers and group activities that will create an environment that encourages young mothers to take charge of their family’s health by exposing them to the joys of growing and preparing healthy food. We will also share our resources and best practices with other organizations throughout the state that work with young mothers so that collectively, we place traditionally low-resource/high-risk-factor families on a trajectory to life-long positive health outcomes.

Focus Area: Comprehensive Sex Education
Campaign Goal: $250,000

Youth deserve to feel comfortable asking sexually-based questions and receiving honest feedback – without judgement. Unfortunately, not all youth are comfortable asking their parents, so a knowledgeable, well-trained adult should be their next resource – instead of one of their peers.

In 2018, GCAPP will train teachers in several counties throughout the state to provide medically accurate, relevant information that will support positive health behaviors in our youth.

Urban Georgia Challenge:

Provide comprehensive sexual health education training for teachers and human service providers in the following metropolitan areas: Atlanta, Albany, Athens, Augusta, Brunswick, Columbus, Dalton, Macon, Rome, and Savannah.

Rural Georgia Challenge:

Develop a community-wide comprehensive sex education implementation strategy for 18 counties with adolescent birth rates that are double or triple the state average.

Focus Area: Repeat Pregnancy Prevention
Campaign Goal: $75,000

While Georgia’s repeat teen birth rate – young mothers who give birth more than once as an adolescent is 22%, young women who participate in GCAPP’s Second Chance Homes Network have a repeat birth rate of only 8%. GCAPP is successful because we know that the key to positive outcomes is wrap-around services: academic support, healthcare for mother and child, sustainable employment, stable housing and child support from the father.

In 2018, GCAPP’s staff will collaborate with statewide human service organizations to provide training, education and support to foster care professionals, foster care parents, school counselors, faith community leaders and other adults who work with pregnant and parenting teens, to share best practices in preventing a second pregnancy.

Focus Area: Parent Empowerment
Campaign Goal: $100,000

When a parent or caregiver is empowered, they are aware of the influences and challenges faced by their children and they are able to help them navigate through the ever-changing landscape of media and peer influence on their children. Empowered parents are able to positively communicate family values and expectations and their children are supported by an adult who listens, shares and empathizes.

GCAPP’s 2018 Parent Empowerment Initiative will occur from Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month (May) through Let’s Talk Month (October). During this period, GCAPP will convene and engage parents and caregivers – through a series of panel discussions, speaker events, and web-based learning opportunities – to help them proactively embrace their role as primary health educators of their children.

Focus Area: Youth Empowerment                                             Campaign Goal: $200,000

College Outreach Initiative:

The highest levels of adolescent sexual activity and births occur in 18 and 19 year olds – the age by which students have typically left high school.
